How to Write a Good Video Hook: 7 Simple Formulas

Updated November 8, 2026

A hook is the first line or scene of a video. Its job is to give someone a reason to keep watching. You do not need to be a copywriter. These seven formulas cover most situations.

1. The mistake

Formula: "Stop doing [thing] like this."

Example: "Stop editing your videos like this." People worry about making mistakes, so they stay to check.

2. The result

Formula: "How I [result] in [time]."

Example: "How I learned video editing in a week." Be specific, and only claim what you can show.

3. The secret

Formula: "Nobody tells you [thing] about [topic]."

Example: "Nobody tells you this about free tools." Use it when you really have a useful, lesser known point.

4. The question

Formula: "Why does [surprising thing] happen?"

Example: "Why do all viral videos start the same way?" Questions create a gap that the viewer wants closed.

5. The comparison

Formula: "[Option A] vs [Option B]: which is better?"

Example: "Phone editing vs laptop editing." Comparison content invites opinions in the comments.

6. The list

Formula: "[Number] [things] that [benefit]."

Example: "Three free tools every creator needs." A number promises a clear, short structure.

7. The story

Formula: "I [did something unusual], and here is what happened."

Example: "I posted every day for a month." Stories work when the outcome is not obvious.

Making the hook visual

A hook is stronger when it is both heard and seen. A text match cut shows the key word on screen while the background flips, so the idea lands even with the sound off. Choose the word that carries the formula, such as mistake, nobody or why.

Rules of thumb

  • Keep it under about ten words.
  • Put the most interesting word early.
  • Do not start with greetings or introductions.
  • Always deliver on the promise in the next few seconds.

Practise with a template

Write five hooks for your next video using five different formulas. Read each aloud and pick the one that makes you most curious. Test the winner, and keep notes on what performs well so that your hooks improve over time.
