Text Match Cut for Instagram Reels: Setup and Tips

Updated November 8, 2026

Reels are built around quick, eye catching openings. A text match cut fits that format well, because it gives viewers one clear word to look at while the visuals change. Here is how to use it properly on Instagram.

Choose the 9:16 size

Reels display at 9:16. Select that size in the maker so your clip fills the screen. For feed posts, a 1:1 square is also an option, but Reels get the most reach from vertical video.

Mind the safe area

Instagram covers parts of the screen with the caption, username, audio label and buttons. Keep the important text in the middle of the frame. The highlighted word in our maker is centred, so it stays visible.

Timing

Keep the match cut around two to four seconds. Reels can run longer, but the hook needs to be quick. After the clip, move directly into the main part of your Reel.

Pick the right style

  • Paper: clean and friendly, good for lifestyle and tips.
  • Newsprint: suits facts, news style or storytelling.
  • Dark: better for serious or dramatic topics.
  • Mixed: adds variety when you want more movement.

Steps to post

  1. Create your video in the maker and download it.
  2. Open Instagram and tap the plus icon, then Reel.
  3. Select the downloaded clip from your gallery.
  4. Add your remaining footage after it, along with any audio.
  5. Write a caption, add a few relevant hashtags and share.

Writing the caption

The caption should add something the video does not already say. A short question encourages comments, which helps the Reel reach more people. Avoid repeating the exact text from the clip.

Audio choices

If you use trending audio, make sure the sound effects from the clip do not clash with it. You can lower the volume of either track in the Instagram editor. Original voiceover often performs well because viewers hear a real person.

Measure what works

Instagram Insights shows plays, watch time and shares for each Reel. If a match cut opening increases the watch time, use it again with different phrases. If not, test shorter clips or a different highlighted word.

A consistent look across your Reels also helps people recognise your account, so try using the same highlight colour each time.
